Computers, cars, and God's law of harmony

At one time I worked in an office that was state-of-the-art in computer technology. In spite of this, we would regularly experience system crashes and malfunctions. These would invariably happen minutes before quitting time or immediately prior to tight deadlines. The degree of the problem was so clearly linked to how eager we were to leave the office that my co-worker and I began to joke about it. But then I had the thought that perhaps more than coincidence was at work.

I was used to applying Biblical truths to every challenge in my life, and although it seemed strange at first to do so in this situation, I thought I'd try. I reasoned that God is omnipotent and in control of every aspect of my life. As His child, I perfectly reflect all of His attributes, which include harmony, peace, patience, and goodwill. Emphasizing this theme, Science and Health explains, "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind" (p. 151).

I began to approach tasks at the end of the day with a different outlook. I stopped using colorful adjectives to describe my computer's lack of cooperation! Instead, I regarded the machine as a tool for expressing intelligence and one that was fully capable of assisting me. I expected harmony to be present at all times instead of dreading a computer crash. I shared some of these ideas with my co-worker, and she agreed to think along these lines, too.
