Fear is an illusion

Fear is an illusion. I can testify to that, many times. While I was a junior in high school, I came down with what was diagnosed as diphtheria. My father, who was not a Christian Scientist, called for the most renowned doctor in the city to attend to me. The doctor urged an immediate tracheotomy, followed by my removal to a hospital. I could see the fear on the faces of my family. I begged to be left alone until morning. I requested that my grandfather, a Christian Science practitioner, treat me through prayer. I also declared that if I were not better by the morning, they could take me to the hospital.

All I remember now is my thinking about sitting in Sunday School and reading the words of Mrs. Eddy imprinted upon the wall: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). This assured me that there was no need for fear. I was in the hands of God, divine Love.

I was visited by the doctor in the early morning. Much to his surprise, I had been healed overnight. He did say, though, that because of my weakened condition, I would have to stay at home in bed for at least two to three weeks, and would probably not be fit to play sports sports for two months. Nevertheless, five days later, I played more than a half a game for my high-school basketball team in league competition. My healing had been quick, complete, and effortless.
