FROM THE DIRECTORS

"The TWO LARGEST WORDS..."

January 1998 marks an important step taken to bring worldwide unity to the expression and recognition of the words Christian Science. From that time forward, the publications and activities of The Mother Church will begin to identify the term Christian Science in English only; it will no longer be translated into other languages. This conforms to the direction of Mary Baker Eddy's statement: "The term Christian Science was introduced by the author to designate the scientific system of divine healing."Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 123.

Historically, there is ample evidence that Mrs. Eddy felt deeply about retaining the English term to identify her discovery rather than translating into other languages. Thus, in 1903 she originally designated as the name for her first translated periodical Der Christian Science Herold.

Our Leader writes in No and Yes: "The two largest words in the vocabulary of thought are 'Christian' and 'Science.' The former is the highest style of man; the latter reveals and interprets God and man; it aggregates, amplifies, unfolds, and expresses the All-God." No and Yes, p. 10.
