How to increase one's faith

When I began to study the Science of Christ, I really longed to add to my faith so I would become a better healer.

In the Bible I read that when the apostles asked Jesus to increase their faith, he said, "If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you" (Luke 17:16). To me, Jesus is saying that even if we believe our faith is small, it is always complete and able to do great things. Faith is a gift of divine Love. We do not increase our faith by personal endeavor, but we wake to the ever-presence of this moral quality by diligently seeking and following the healing Christ.

This different from putting our faith in another person. Faith in someone's personality encourages the mistaken belief that that person is more spiritual or closer to God than we are. Or, we may feel we are more spiritually-minded than others! These feelings can mislead us. We may feel a superiority or inferiority that has nothing to do with our true relation to God or His unchanging love for us. True faith involves humility, the conviction that we can do nothing of ourselves. We need also to trust God, Love, to care for all. "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals," says Science and Health (p. 13).
