When our son was about seven months old, my husband was...
When our son was about seven months old, my husband was carrying him downstairs in one arm, while holding two briefcases in the other. He slipped, and up into the air went everything he was holding, including our son. The baby landed at the bottom of the stairs.
I was very frightened and found that, while I was trying to declare in prayer God's allness and goodness, the fear was overwhelming me to the point that I could not really think of anything. I felt blank.
After about five minutes of trying to soothe our son, with no results, I called a Christian Science practitioner. He reminded me of a hymn that begins "Everlasting arms of Love / Are beneath, around, above" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 53). I was assured that God's arms were always around my son, and that he could never fall and had never fallen from God's care. The phone call was brief, and with those comforting thoughts I returned to my husband and son. The practitioner said he would pray for the baby right away.
