On page 4 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy we read, "Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness." I have had two proofs of how effective this activity can be.

During my grade school and junior high years, I suffered from severe eczema that covered my hands and arms. My appearance caused much concern among friends and teachers. But my parents were steadfast in praying with me, often in the middle of the night when the condition would flare. At different times, Christian Science practitioners were employed to help me understand the healing truths that God was the one, divine Parent, and that I was His loved child. I was encouraged to learn as much as I could about the examples Jesus and Mrs. Eddy set in their lives. As I did, I became impressed by the unswerving love these two individuals showed to others, and I began to make a conscious effort to express this same patient and persistent love when dealing with my friends and siblings.

Unlike many of the quick physical healings I had become accustomed to, the healing I had of eczema came after years of putting into practice what I had been learning in Christian Science. As a result of my efforts to express love, I became a better person. I also gained a stronger conviction of God's ever-present love for man. My skin became completely smooth, and has remained so for over twenty years. My fingernails, which my grandfather, a physician, had told me would never grow, have indeed grown in straight and strong.
