Relinquishing egotism

I was praying recently to know how to go after the most basic imposition on man's harmony that needs healing in any challenge, instead of just trying to get rid of the surface trouble. I had learned early in my study of Christian Science that the most visible or physical form of a problem signals a more fundamental mental imposition that needs to be dissolved. It signals some ignorance of God's allness.

As I prayed I could see clearly that the most basic mental imposition is a wrong sense of self—a sense of ego or personality separate from the one great I am , God. Problems of all sorts cling to this false sense—much as two matching pieces of Velcro fastener adhere to each other!

An illustrative scenario came to thought. Imagine a person covered with patches of the bottom part of Velcro (the side that has a nap that grips). He walks into a room filled with floating objects that are covered with the top side of Velcro (the side with hooks that latch into the nap). Quickly the individual would be covered with these various objects wherever there was a receptive patch of Velcro.
