The Psalmist assures: "The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore" (Ps. 121:7, 8). And Paul reminds us, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7).

In May 1993, while visiting a farm family on the Manitoba prairie, I had occasion to witness the healing power of these Biblical truths in my life. My host had a sizable horse-drawn wagon weighing nearly half a ton, and a pair of harness-broken horses. One morning he suggested we take the wagon into town to pick up his wife.

We had no sooner climbed on the buckboard seat than the horses began to panic and bolt. My host yelled, "Jump!" as he himself jumped from the wagon. But before I could heed his advice, the sudden lurching movement sent me flying down into the wagon bed. The sides of the wagon were about three feet high, and I thought it would be difficult, even foolhardy, to try to stand up, much less clear the sides and jump. So I lay flat on my stomach on the floor. Through the cracks in the sideboards of the wagon I could see trees flying by, but had no idea where we were headed. It was like riding blindfolded in a speeding car with no steering or brakes.
