A glimpse of light

Even a glimmer of good is able to dispel the darkness.

Sometimes we are assaulted by a barrage of unhappy thoughts, feelings, or experiences—possibly through the print and electronic media—that present news about society in a way that emphasizes the sensational. Where then do we look to find relief in a world screaming about problems with the environment, morals, disease, famine, and other areas?

In my own life, I have found that one way to defend myself against aggressive thoughts and to replace them with purity, health, and peace is to reach out for and appreciate every sign of good in my experience. This is not always easy, but a prayerful approach helps us to take a healing approach to the world's problems.

Recently, in the city where I live, I made a daily effort to take any glimpse of good that I saw anywhere—whether in the beauty of a sunset, an act of courtesy on the street or in traffic, or just someone's friendly smile—and to understand that it is just the tip of the iceberg of the good that is active and available to everyone at all times. Doing this has given me a better perspective on my career. I have also been able to see good in situations and in people where at first fear, hate, selfishness, or confusion seemed to prevail. Being expectant of good has even helped me overcome what appeared to be great obstacles in finishing my college education. By putting a magnifying glass to the little examples of good that I find, I can then see with more clarity the true source of good, which is God. Seeing these evidences of His love operating in my life strengthens me and helps me to progress.
