Who couldn't use more light, more clarity in a time of questioning? And if we are in the middle of our own search for light, it sometimes helps to hear the experiences of others who are finding "there ariseth light in the darkness," as the Psalmist describes it. This column records experiences that show something of the wide range of seekers and the way in which the light of Christ, Truth, restores, redirects, and regenerates lives.

Doubts lifted

Finding Light

I was seventeen years old when I first came across Christian Science. It happened on a remote cattle ranch along the banks of the Missouri River. My family had been in turmoil at the time, my parents were divorced, and my father had remarried and was living in San Francisco. In the summers he brought his wife to the ranch, and I got to know her as an intelligent and cultured woman.

During my first semester at college, I came to the ranch for Christmas. I got snowed in for nearly a month by a savage blizzard. Looking for something to read in the big house, I found a stack of Christian Science Journal's and Christian Science Sentinels. It dawned on me that the periodicals belonged to my father's wife.

I began to read with curiosity, and with growing enthusiasm. I read all the magazines from cover to cover. This was truly a special experience for me as I had never heard of Christian Science before. As soon as I got back to school I bought my first copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was so excited about this book that for many months I read little else. Instinctively I knew this was what I had always been looking for. Science and Health was my constant companion for five years. I took it with me to Europe, where I studied, and I gave a number of testimonies at the branch church I attended. Also, I met a young woman to whom I introduced Christian Science. She had a proclivity for it, and later she became my wife.
