My understanding of Christian Science began when I attended...
My understanding of Christian Science began when I attended Sunday School. In those early years, the spiritual truths I heard made absolute sense to me and gave me a feeling of a spiritual basis to life. I didn't at first study Christian Science in a disciplined way. But I did turn to it wholeheartedly if I came down occasionally with a physical illness. And it healed me.
One healing—of an addiction I had—still inspires me. During my college years I smoked rather heavily. To my way of thinking back then, the act of smoking was entirely separate from my adherence to the "important" teachings of Christian Science.
But I had something to learn about the Christ. I remember stating to whoever was interested enough to listen. "I would never have the willpower to stop smoking." That was correct. Willpower is not a healer, and an addiction of any kind is eliminated only by the Christ, which totally destroys the desire for destructive, addictive substances.
