As a teenager, I was not happy with my view of myself
As a teenager, I was not happy with my view of myself. Also, I had physical problems that needed attention. Although my mother had been a licensed nurse, all her efforts to help me medically proved to be of no real help.
I had been raised in a Protestant church, and I realized what I needed was a practical, dynamic, healing religion—religion that could transform me for the better, the way Jesus had transformed people. I began to search for such a healing church. My brother heard that Christian Science was a healing religion, and I purchased a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and began to study it, as well as attend a local Christian Science Church. And I quickly realized that Christian Science was the answer to my prayers.
As I continued to study, there was increasing spiritual growth, as well as freedom from physical problems. Almost continuous cycles of bronchitis, head colds, and laryngitis, which would last from fall to spring, were healed. Terrible recurring nightmares, from which I would wake totally exhausted, ceased through prayer. Severe migraine headaches were healed with my own prayers, as well as occasional help from Christian Science practitioners. Chronic constipation stopped, mainly through my considering Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 283 of Science and Health "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action." Christian Science also brought about my victory over fingernail biting.
