What Matters to You

Is it safe to rely on God?

I WAS exploring a nearby marsh with others from my high-school ecology class. A classmate called in the distance and said he'd found something we ought to see. I raced through the swamp to find out what was so interesting. In my rush, I stepped on a long rusty nail. My foot became a sorry sight and I couldn't go any further. A friend helped me to the truck where I waited to be taken back to school.

At first my condition didn't worry me. God's ever-present help had met my every need in the past. I expected this time to be no different. I silently prayed and remained calm about the whole incident—that is, until my teacher became involved.

He was very concerned, and wasn't timid about saying so. He knew I was a Christian Scientist but said I would be in danger if I didn't go to a doctor and get medical treatment. I had great respect for him and found myself wondering if I really could be healed through spiritual means alone.
