Spiritually celebrating Christmas
Among Christians, the Christmas season is generally the most loved time of each year. It commemorates the birth of Jesus and reminds us of the ever-present Christ, Truth, which Jesus so fully demonstrated through his healing works.
Sometimes it seems that the human activities associated with Christmas almost obliterate its true meaning, and we may long to see this wonderful event celebrated in less material ways. We cannot, however, help spiritualize the world's beliefs about Christmas simply by attempting to eliminate human customs.
Oliver Cromwell, who ruled England during the mid-1600s, was a Puritan who had very strict views about Christmas celebrations. Winston S. Churchill writes in The New World: A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1965, p. 312): "Parliament was deeply concerned at the liberty which [Christmas] gave to carnal and sensual delights. Soldiers were sent round London on Christmas Day before dinnertime to enter private houses without warrants and seize meat cooking in all kitchens and ovens."
