One of the benefits I have enjoyed since finding Christian Science is the protection that's always there through God's law. For forty years I was a professional big-rig truck driver. For twenty-five of those years I had Christian Science.

A Christian Science practitioner gave me some simple spiritual truths that meant a great deal to me. I kept them on my sun visor where I could refer to them often and knew they applied not only to myself, but to all on the highway.

A great many of the four million miles I logged involved moving construction equipment of huge lengths up to 110 feet and weights up to 190,000 pounds. Another part of my driving experience was with tankers, transporting hot asphalt oil. This oil is maintained at above 350 degrees Fahrenheit. One time I was pumping out an underground storage tank into my tanker, when a hose broke, blowing this hot oil on my face and ear and sealing my eyes closed. I immediately turned to "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health, which begins, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (p. 468). As I declared the inability of matter to feel sensation, within a short time the heat and pain left. I then became conscious of myself as the spiritual idea of God, and of the fact that nothing but God, good, had ever touched me.
