Modern shepherds
Keeping watch over our thoughts
By night (and by day) enables us
To turn away wolflike invaders;
To cherish our trustworthy sheep—
Our constant stock
Of faith and understanding; and
To shelter our lambs—
Fresh ideas of promise—
So they will not be snared, blemished, or lost.
Gently nourished, they may joyfully
Grow by leaps and bounds.
Keeping watch over our flocks
Both night and day enables us
To ponder the message of Christ
Which guides our thoughts around
rough, stony ground
And leads them to rich pastures
Where still waters lie with healing balm.
Keeping watch
Enables us to hear the angel voices
Resounding again and again
With "tidings of great joy."
