"Ye shall know the truth..."

Read a newspaper, listen to the radio, or watch television, and you get reports of political repression, famine, unemployment—not to mention people sick and dying of diseases. Yet, read the Bible, and you get this report: "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31, 32).

What is this truth that will free mankind from its woes? The Bible actually begins its "report" by telling us that God made man in His own image and likeness and saw His entire creation as "very good" (Gen. 1:31). Whatever is bad, material, or discordant could never be a creation of the one good and all-harmonious God, divine Spirit. As the Bible points out, "Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs?" (James 3:12). God, good, could never create evil. Since God is the only creator, evil must be an illusion caused by the false belief that creation is material and mortal, separated from God.

Consider what happens with hypnotism. A hypnotized person experiences the effects of his own acceptance of the suggestions of the hypnotizer. In that hypnotic state, he sees a world that is different from the one he saw before being hypnotized. This continues until an awakening, or a change of consciousness, takes place.
