On April 25, 1993, my whole family worshiped with me in our branch church at Imo River-Obigbo, Nigeria. From the pulpit was read the account of Jesus healing the centurion's servant (see Luke 7:2–10). The corelative passages from Science and Health brought me much encouragement, and when I returned from the service I went to my office to study more, especially this statement: "Man, being immortal, has a perfect indestructible life" (Science and Health, p. 209). I saw this statement as one of the absolute truths of man's being.

As I was leaving my office a message rang in my thought saying, "Be conscious." I went back and used my concordance to Science and Health to find a statement on page 14: "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints." While thinking deeper, I remembered another truth: "Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered" (ibid., p. 425).

I left my office for home, happier for this communion. About 8 p.m., I decided to go and thank a friend who had dropped my son off at his school some few days before. I took my torchlight to walk a distance of about three poles off. Just a pole off my house, on the major road, I saw a Land Rover loaded with iron rods in the back, moving at a very high speed in the opposite direction. I continued walking along the edge of the tarred road.
