Over fifty years ago my aunt came to live in our home and brought a great gift to our family—she lived her religion, Christian Science, so beautifully that both my father and I became interested as a result of her example. This year marks my forty-fourth year of church membership.
In May 1953 my first testimony appeared in the Sentinel, telling about a healing of hay fever. I have continued to be free of this ailment since.
This statement from Science and Health, which refers to the children of Israel in the Bible, has been very uplifting for me: "There is to-day danger of repeating the offence of the Jews by limiting the Holy One of Israel and asking: 'Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?' What cannot God do?" (p. 135) These words have helped me many times through the years to put my full trust in God, regardless of the circumstances—and some circumstances have been quite severe. I have been protected during auto accidents, and have had healings of bursitis, poisoning, laryngitis, colds, and toothaches, all because of a growing knowledge that there is no situation beyond God's help. This knowledge has helped to bless me with good employment, companionship, and greater self-confidence.
At an age when it was considered difficult for a woman to find employment, I was hired by one company, and this position continued until my retirement nineteen years later. One of my employers remarked that I had used only three days of sick leave during all those years, and thought that was remarkable. I felt humbly grateful to God.
When my husband passed on suddenly, I found it necessary to take up many duties I had never before handled. At first I felt quite inadequate. Again, praying to God for guidance, I was led to contact certain individuals or firms I had known nothing about for needed information. I was never tempted to think of the many kindnesses shown me as mere "coincidences," nor at any time did I feel fearful or as if I were on my own. There was always a beautiful conviction of God's presence and power, which continues to bless me now.
Studying Christian Science has indeed changed my life for the better. It's wonderful to know that this beautiful religion is available to all. I can't imagine being a part of today's world without this truth, and continue to be grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for her discovery of the Science of God.
