During nine months of pregnancy, I realized for the first...

During nine months of pregnancy, I realized for the first time just how many theories there are, and how much fear there is, surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. I had such a wonderful experience being pregnant and giving birth that I would like to share this with others.

From the beginning of my pregnancy I prayed, along with a practitioner. During the pregnancy I refrained from taking vitamins, iron, and other supplements, although they were recommended by the doctor whom I had engaged to deliver the baby. Rather, I affirmed my wholeness based on the spiritual identity of man as "the compound idea of God, including all right ideas" (Science and Health, p. 475). The baby and I already had the sustenance we needed, and nothing could be added or lacking in our lives, because our relationship to God never changes. Blood tests administered by the doctor revealed perfectly normal blood conditions.

I prayed with the idea that God is always in control of every action of man, and that I—the very expression of divine Mind—could never experience anything that indicated there is a power apart from God. As the birth neared, I also prayed to reverse scientifically, through spiritual understanding, the fear that I would become delirious during the peak of labor. That had bothered me greatly, and I knew it was right for me to be fully conscious at all times. I can say truly that I remember every wonderful moment of giving birth and rejoice in the remembrance.
