Abraham, the man who trusted God
This is the first in a series of three articles just for you that tell about Abraham and his commitment to God. We'll look at Abraham 's life and what makes him an important Bible figure. Open your Bible and join us!
The first book of the Bible is called Genesis. One of the people we learn about in Genesis is a man who was very faithful to God. His name was Abraham. His wife's name was Sarah, and they both had great spiritual courage. (You can find this account in chapters 11 and 12 of Genesis.)
They grew up in a place called Ur of the Chaldees. When Abraham's father became the head of the family, he moved them all to Haran, which was in the land of Mesopotamia. Lot, who was Abraham's nephew, moved with them. Their family raised sheep and goats and stayed there for some time.
Their neighbors worshiped idols, but Abraham and his family prayed to God. Abraham trusted God with all his heart. After his father was gone, he became chief of the clan. God told him to move to a new country. Abraham was seventy-five years old. He did not know where they would go. But he and his family knew God would lead them safely. So Abraham and Sarah and Lot and all the people that lived with them left Haran. After many days they reached Canaan, and God told them that this was their new home. ...
In the New Testament, the book of Hebrews describes the type of place Abraham was looking for on the journey: "He looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God" (11:10). Abraham was confident that God would care for them. God promised Abraham that he and his family would be blessed. And because they believed God, they discovered that God could always be trusted. Isn't it helpful to know that we all can trust God to guide and care for us?
Abraham can be an example for us today. Was there something in this Bible account that was especially meaningful to you? Maybe you've had an opportunity to be an "Abraham" yourself, to trust God to guide and protect you.
