A Few years ago I was healed of chronic, severe headaches that had been bothering me for many years. They would come on suddenly, and with such intensity that I was unable to study and pray for myself; I was often left virtually incapacitated for at least a day. Each time I would call a Christian Science practitioner for help through Christian Science treatment.

I became very despondent that the condition kept recurring, despite the prayer that had taken place, and began asking myself "why" and "What did I not do that I should have done?" On one occasion the practitioner pointed out Mary Baker Eddy's admonition "Lest human reason becloud spiritual understanding, say not in thy heart: Sickness is possible because one's thought and conduct do not afford a sufficient defence against it. Trust in God, and 'He shall direct thy paths.' When evil was avenging itself on its destroyer, his preeminent goodness, the Godlike man said, 'My burden is light.' Only he who learns through meekness and love the falsity of supposititious life and intelligence in matter, can triumph over their ultimatum, sin, suffering, and death" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 161). This passage helped me to separate the problem from my real being.

I saw also that while I had been focusing on getting rid of the immediate pain and discomfort, the practitioner was praying for the permanent healing of the problem, which would only come through spiritualized thought. For this reason, when I was well again he would remind me to continue my regular study of the Bible Lesson, to deeply consider Christ Jesus' teaching in the Gospels, and to read through the Bible, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and the other writings of Mrs. Eddy on an ongoing basis.
