In May 1960 my husband and I took a trip around the United States. We decided to take the "southern route" going west, and the "northern route" coming back east. Several well-intentioned friends had warned us about being on the desert. "Have plenty of cold drinks on hand, and avoid being there in the middle of the day," they had said.
However, we somehow got off the main route and suddenly realized that we were indeed in a desert area, and it was already midmorning. It was 110 degrees, and we were not prepared (our car did not have air conditioning).
At noon I started to feel quite ill. My husband, who was not practicing Christian Science at the time, advised me to soak a towel in cold water, place it on my head, and lie down. I did this but felt no better.
