Step by step

Right now each of us has the ability to prove God's healing power.

OUR daily walk is usually a time for lively talk between my wife and me. Recently we discussed Bible messages, and at one point she asked which one meant the most to me. I said it was the promise that we can rely on God as a sure help in times of trouble. Thinking later about our conversation, I was reminded that the Scriptures are filled with variations of this promise. But beyond words, we continually find concrete examples of this help: Moses' parting of the Red Sea; Daniel saved in the lions' den; three young men untouched, totally unharmed, in a fiery furnace; the marvelous healing works of Christ Jesus and his apostles—to name just a few. Perhaps the greatest assurance of this help is found in the Master's words recorded in John's Gospel, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

Through consistent prayer, and study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, we can increasingly realize and demonstrate God's ever-present help, following Jesus' example. The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, tells us, "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'"

Many lives touched by Christian Science attest to this step by-step growth. In my own experience, the first years of my study of Science (I had been raised in a different Christian faith) were blessed with many proofs of God's healing power. By and large these came about with the help of a Christian Science practitioner. This was a time of growing understanding, but I held to a belief that a nearly total comprehension of Truth was required before one could effectively demonstrate Christian Science "on his own" with any degree of certainty.
