I am so grateful for the many blessings that Christian Science has brought to my family over four generations. It has healed and maintained us throughout a variety of challenges. One healing that my brother experienced when we were growing up stands out to me. It proved so completely the words of the Psalmist "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
When my brother was in the sixth grade, he became unable to walk. Our neighbors were aware that we were Christian Scientists who normally relied on prayer for healing. One neighbor became alarmed and initiated a petition to force my brother to enter a hospital for care. She thought my brother might be suffering from a communicable disease.
My father was serving in the local branch church as First Reader. The Second Reader had formerly been a medical nurse and was married to a practicing physician. The couple's six children were all being raised with Christian Science care for healing. In the light of the concern about contagion, my parents decided that it was best to consult with the physician about what needed to be done. He visited with my brother in our home, and his diagnosis was that the disease was a form of meningitis.
