I decided as a child that if a religion is not practical, if it can't help you now, it's not worth much. I was raised in Christian Science, and I have had several healings in my life that have demonstrated to me the practical nature of this Science.
One day, when I was away at college, I lost control of my bicycle while going around a corner on a busy street. I flipped over the handlebars and landed in a heap in the gutter. I got up immediately and started walking home. The bicycle was a wreck, but I was all right. I was very grateful for this protection. But later that evening I could not lift one arm above my shoulder, and any quick movement of the arm caused pain. The apparent seriousness of the injury made me fearful. But I remembered that I had always relied on God for my well-being, and I knew that the power of God was able to help me.
Over the next several days I prayed to understand that God would never allow one of His ideas to suffer or be injured. I also realized that the same spiritual law that allowed Christ Jesus to heal the sick and raise the dead could certainly be applied to heal my shoulder. There was steady progress, and before long all pain was gone and I could move my arm freely. Then I injured the shoulder again while throwing a ball. I continued to pray to know that healing based on God's law is permanent. Soon I was back playing center field for our Softball team and making throws to home plate.
