Divine intelligence: a healing influence in our lives
There is a spiritual basis for intelligence that enables us to overcome limitations, whether these are self-imposed or the result of others' thoughts and attitudes toward us.
To believe that our intelligence is determined by hereditary and environmental factors is to shortchange ourselves. Such a material sense of intelligence swings back and forth between pride and insecurity. We may feel proud of our intellectual capacities while also fearing that at some point they will let us down.
We get a different perspective on intelligence when we think of it in spiritual terms. If we perceive God as infinite Mind—the source of all wisdom and intelligence—we begin to grasp something of the unlimited nature of true intelligence.
Intelligence is actually a divine quality of God. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes of intelligence, "It is the primal and eternal quality of infinite Mind, of the triune Principle,— Life, Truth, and Love,—named God." Elsewhere in this book she speaks of intelligence in these terms: "Substance; self-existent and eternal Mind; that which is never unconscious nor limited." Science and Health, pp. 469, 588.
