God's promise of family

Even if we are separated from our families or have lost loved ones, we are not alone.

Don't we all long to be included in a family? Surely we yearn to be loved, understood, and accepted. And we all need the love of a mother and a father, no matter what our age is.

Usually we think of families as blood relations. This would be fine if all our families were warm, loving, and supportive. But not all families are like this—nor are they always present! Some individuals do not have a single family member left. Others' families live too far away for more than occasional visits. These all too frequent human predicaments leave many out of a warm family circle. Do we have to accept this as the way life is sometimes? Or is there a spiritual answer to this human problem?

The Bible refers to God as Love, and also as Father. Christ Jesus often spoke of his divine Father, even beginning the Lord's Prayer with "our Father." He spoke and acted as if he always felt the presence of his divine Father, even saying at one time, "I and my Father are one." John 10:30.
