If I wait any longer to share my testimony, I will continue to...
If I wait any longer to share my testimony, I will continue to be like the nine lepers Christ Jesus healed, who gave no thanks for their healing (see Luke 17:11–19). My family and I have been blessed and healed many times in Christian Science, and I am deeply grateful for this.
As a boy I attended a Christian Science Sunday School until I was sixteen. Then, under the influence of intellectualism and peer pressure, I fell away from Science. When I entered the armed services during the Second World War, I smoked, drank, and behaved in a manner quite different from my upbringing. However, I accepted a small pocket edition of the King James Bible and a matching copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy from the Christian Science Wartime Committee in London. These books went with me into the front lines, usually in my pack.
On Good Friday in 1943 I was with an armored regiment in Tunisia that had harbored for the night in the hills west of Tunis. For some reason I woke extremely early (we were due to break harbor at dawn) and read from the Bible the ninety-first Psalm and from Science and Health "the scientific statement of being" (see p. 468). A great deal of fear had been expressed by those around me, and this reading quieted my fear. The night before, a number of the men had participated in a communion service from which I had felt excluded, so this reading was my way of reaching out to God in prayer.
