For a number of years I wanted to know why it seemed that God didn't take care of people completely and heal all their sicknesses. At this time I knew nothing at all of Christian Science—apart from the fact that it existed and that we had a Christian Science church in the town where I lived.

At this time I had what was apparently an internal growth, and I reached a day when I could do very little walking. I had for some weeks made the decision to trust God completely, and that night I told Him so and reaffirmed this trust. The following day the whole thing passed away—completely and permanently.

After this experience I decided to stop relying on medical means at all and to investigate Christian Science. I went to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at the local Christian Science church. I borrowed the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and by reading it was healed of a pain I had developed and of the smoking habit. During many years I had smoked between thirty and forty cigarettes a day. I had had no wish to stop smoking; I had thought I enjoyed it. But the habit and desire just left me.
