I bought my first textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health...

I bought my first textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, in 1910, when I was playing a concert in Boston. At that time Boston was full of controversy about Mrs. Eddy. The newspapers carried editorials about her. Some could not praise her enough for her contribution; others could not criticize her enough. And that is why I invested a dollar for Science and Health—to find out for myself what it was all about.

The first sentence in Science and Health got my attention. It states (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I was so impressed with this statement that I continued to read. Being a concert violinist and traveling from city to city gave me plenty of time to read the textbook—in my dressing room, in railroad stations, on trains, and in hotel rooms. The more I read, the more convinced I became of the accuracy of Mrs. Eddy's scientific and spiritual interpretation of the Bible. Seventy-nine years later I can say it was the best investment I've made. Would you pay one dollar for a life of peace and happiness, free of illness?

Science and Health states (p. 246): "Except for the error of measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful, man would enjoy more than threescore years and ten and still maintain his vigor, freshness, and promise. ... Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness." When I first read this statement I found it hard to believe, but now, in my late nineties, I can say, "Man should live to be fourscore years and ten and retain his faculties. In fact, he should improve with age, more like a Stradivarius violin." I have never been in a hospital for medical care. I don't wear glasses or a hearing aid, neither do I use a cane. I cut my own lawn, drive a car, just got married, and I still work and make public appearances. When people ask, "To what do you attribute your longevity?" I reply, "To Christian Science."
