One realm, one race

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus... There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

(Galatians 3:26, 28)

In the early 1960s, racial tensions were running high in the United States. This was particularly true in the South, where schools and other public facilities had never been properly integrated. In many communities, black people could not find a table at white-owned restaurants. There were separate water fountains in public buildings. If blacks were allowed in movie houses, it was only in a section to the rear or in the balcony. The color of your skin also determined whether you would be sent to the back of a public bus or even to the back pews of some churches.
