When our son was a toddler, we noticed that at different times a distant expression would come over him and his muscles would seem to tighten up. This caused him to remain motionless for short periods. I had recently begun the study of Christian Science and felt encouraged by talking with a local Christian Science practitioner, who prayed for the child and helped us to understand more fully God's tender care for and perfect government of man.

At that time our family of three moved to a farm. My husband's work kept him away for long hours of the day and into the night, leaving me alone with our son, who continued to have these muscle spasms. I recall distinctly the comfort our son and I felt as we learned and sang hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. There was an old piano stored in the building below our apartment, and I delighted in playing the hymns.

One day we drove some fifty miles to attend a Christian Science lecture. The lecturer's message included the point that there are no diseases beyond the healing power of God's law. I left the lecture full of hope and love. Whenever I tended to our son's needs, I rejoiced in the protective love of God, our true Father-Mother. How comforting it was to know that divine Love was guiding and tenderly caring for us. I never doubted God's love.
