It was because the Sentinel was given to my mother as a Christmas...
It was because the Sentinel was given to my mother as a Christmas present that I came into Christian Science. Mother's friend from childhood, a lifelong Christian Scientist, was there when she needed her. Mother was often comforted by the patient caring of this friend. When she gave my mother the Sentinel, however, it was I who "ate it up." I had always been searching for God, reading many books and works on religion and philosophy. I was deeply touched by the testimonies of healing at the back of the Sentinel. They represented a whole new world for me.
I married for the second time later that year, moved to a faraway city with my small child, and was expecting another child. I found myself a "battered wife." My life was literally saved by what I remembered from the Sentinels. At one point, angered by an overwhelming sense of responsibility and crazed with alcohol, my husband almost ended my life. I kept telling him this particular night that God loved him.
Finally he took me to his mother's home. As I lay recuperating for the next two weeks, arrangements having been made for my child to live with others, I drew on the spiritual truths I remembered reading in the Sentinel of God's healing presence. I am sure my complete recovery and the safety of my unborn child were due to the understanding I'd gained of God's great love. Later in the year, after I had exhausted the counseling services in that city, I began to learn more about Christian Science.
