One vacation I went swimming from a boat far out in a lake

One vacation I went swimming from a boat far out in a lake. Suddenly the weather changed and the lake became choppy with a bitter wind. As I swam for the boat, an adverse cold current gripped me and I was making no headway. Neither of my friends in the boat knew how to row, and their efforts only took them farther away. After a while it seemed I had no hope of avoiding drowning.

Thanks to what I had learned of God's ever-presence in Christian Science, I was not afraid. I turned over on my back and prayed, "Father, help me. I have work to do and a family to bring up." Just a simple petition. I was led to call instructions to my friends in the boat, and soon we moved toward each other as if drawn together. In no time at all I was dragging myself aboard with the last of my strength. I truly felt that God had saved me.

While I was in another country I contracted a diarrheic condition that troubled me every few weeks and that I had come to accept as part of life. Then my infant son was seized with the same symptoms. For two days and nights I prayed for him, and he was healed, but my healing had not yet come. Still, by affirming truths of the spiritual nature of God's perfect idea, man, I was able to carry out my daily work. One evening I suddenly knew I was healed. What joy and gratitude filled me! The trouble never recurred. This healing opened the way for me to take Christian Science class instruction.
