Inspired by my grandmother's love for Christian Science, my mother and her sister became students. Later my mother introduced my father to Science and they both became active church members. I owe much to my parents for impressing upon me early and often the practicality of the teachings of this Science.

My three brothers and I had a number of healings as children. An outstanding one was a young brother's healing, entirely through spiritual means, of what is referred to as an undershot jaw, considered hereditary. We had few of the diseases commonly associated with children, and the ones we did experience were quickly healed through prayer alone.

For as long as I can remember, I had wanted some day to live abroad. After two years of college, a year of secretarial school, and some work experience, I decided to join the United States Foreign Service. As one of the steps to qualify, I took the required physical examination. Afterward I was informed that one of the tests indicated a possible physical disorder. The doctors expressed concern about my becoming sick far from home.
