I Was a political prisoner after the Second World War under the totalitarian regime then in power in my native country. I had been the leader of a partisan group. About five years later I was arrested again and this time given the ultimate sentence—twenty years in prison. (The death penalty had been abolished.)

I was in prison for several years, when amnesty was granted to all political prisoners. Throughout that time I prayed every night; I wanted to be shown the right way. After my release I realized that my prayers had been answered. One day my wife took me to a family's home where some students of Christian Science frequently came together, despite being persecuted by the secret police.

The new understanding of divine Love that I gained from these gatherings enabled me, very gradually, to purify my consciousness of the many thoughts of hatred and revenge that had taken root over the course of many years. It was a very hard battle because I had endured mistreatment and humiliation as a political prisoner for so long. I began to realize I had to forgive all of those who had tortured me. Indeed, even more, I had to love them in their real natures as God's children.
