Several years ago I found myself alone with four children to care for. Our home had two mortgages, and I had to make payments on both of them. I was working three jobs. I would substitute teach in the public schools during the day, direct a small commercial college at night, and work for an insurance company during the weekend.

When I finally fell into bed in the early hours, you can imagine how hard it was for me to reach for my Bible, but I did. I kept hoping to find the comfort and strength needed to keep going, but somehow comfort just did not come. I had been brought up to believe that one did not question whatever God sent and that He would relieve you of your burden in due time. Meanwhile you just endured. Laboring under these misconceptions, I came to feel that life, for me, was not worth living.

One day I met a fine man. Soon I realized that we had many interests in common. I was attracted to his calmness, surety of purpose, and lack of fear about the future. I felt he had something strong to hold on to that I did not possess. When I commented on this, he told me that his strength came from a knowledge of God's goodness and love, which had been shown to him through Christian Science. I wanted to learn about Christian Science and became a willing student.
