As I was growing up during the great Depression of the thirties, it seemed that our family had more than our share of challenges. At that time the teaching of dedicated teachers in the Christian Science Sunday School I attended and the example of my parents in their daily practice of Christian Science sparked my desire to gain a better understanding of God and His goodness and love.

While I was still a pupil in the Sunday School, I reasoned that I could devote at least five minutes of my day to reading part of the Bible Lesson. I read one section each night before going to bed. That, together with praying the Lord's Prayer (see Matt. 6:9-13), quieted my fear of the night and of the days ahead. Later I found I wanted to read more and did so.

As a teen-ager I felt very unhappy. So I looked for verses and statements about happiness and joy in the Bible and in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Articles in the Sentinel and various hymns were also helpful. I began to see that joy was already mine because it was a God-derived quality included in my true being. I saw that I naturally expressed joy as His spiritual reflection.
