"Please don't worry about me, Mom"

The children are grown and living their own lives. We still want to help them, to be there when they need us, but how do we do that without interfering?

My daughter's soft voice was still sounding in my ear as I turned away from the telephone. I could feel the tug of worry and fear over the news she had just relayed. She was facing a difficult personal relationship challenge as well as a troubled time at work.

I hurried to my Bible and to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. As a Christian Scientist, I'd learned to find comfort and practical answers by following the instructions in these two very special books. My daughter had also been turning to these books in her recent experiences. She had just married, moved out of state, and started a brand-new career—all at the same time.

By turning to God and turning away from the hypnotic picture of a chaotic world, I knew that I could be freed of fear. I opened Science and Health and read, "When examined in the light of divine Science, mortals present more than is detected upon the surface, since inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs must be counterfeits of Truth." Science and Health, p. 267. Already I was comforted. I knew God, Truth, was in control! But I longed to help my daughter and to prove once again the power of prayer.
