I was quite happy, joyous, and healthy when I found Christian Science

I was quite happy, joyous, and healthy when I found Christian Science. At that time I was living in New York City and had a good job and good friends. But something was lacking, and I didn't know what it was. I was living by faith—as a Portuguese translation of the Bible puts it (Heb. 11:1), "in the certainty of things hoped for, in the conviction of facts that are not seen." [In the King James Version this reads: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."]

When I learned of Christian Science through a fellow worker, I immediately felt that I had found what I had been lacking. From then on I plunged into the study of Science, going as deeply as possible. I didn't know that I had such a "hunger and thirst" for a spiritual understanding of God and man. Christian Science was really the greatest marvel that had come into my life.

From the day I found this pearl, I felt an enormous desire to share Science—the key to genuine happiness—with the people of my country. So when I returned home I worked with another student of Christian Science (whom I met later) to organize a group of Christian Scientists which has recently been recognized by The Mother Church as a Christian Science Society. This sharing has also led to the establishment of another group of Christian Scientists in a northern Portuguese city. Both groups continue to grow.
