Pure motives: essential to healing

There was that question again! Every Sunday I heard it from the platform of the local branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I attended: "Would you like to join our church?" Then the First Reader gave information about applying for church membership.

How I longed to join! There had been incontrovertible proofs of healing for me—many of them. I wasn't relying on medicine. I was free from the use of drugs—I didn't even drink! What's more, I had attended the Christian Science Sunday School until my late teens. Now, years later, more than anything else, I loved and longed to serve the Cause of Christian Science. Church membership would enable me to do this more effectively. So what was holding me back? Alas, I had been smoking, heavily, for thirteen years. But every Sunday came that irresistible invitation.

And so I prayed. I prayed that God would reveal to me that my spiritual selfhood was and always had been free from the enslavement of matter. Central to the teachings of Christian Science is the all-power of Spirit, God. This message is found over and over again in the Bible, as in the assertion "I am the Lord, and there is none else." Isa. 45:6.
