It is fitting that observances are held in many countries around the world to celebrate independence. Political freedom that has been won and defended on battlefields at the cost of human life is a precious legacy that deserves prayerful maintenance.
But even those who live in free countries may need to learn to live free. People are far from free if they fear that their freedom may be lost. People are far from free if they are slaves to bad habits, subject to suffering, afraid to stand for their convictions, and ultimately bound to die because they believe themselves to be mortal.
Christian Science offers God-given freedom from the fetters of materiality that make people believe they are liable to loss, sin, sickness, intimidation, and death. Such liberty is more than a prize of victory over domination. Divine freedom is an indomitable reality that may be demonstrated by all.
