Claim the reward
Our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, makes it quite clear in his parable of the talents that there is a rich reward for conscientious, steady, fruitful work according to individual initiative. Effort was similarly rewarded. The servant who worked to turn his two talents into four came forward and was just as praised and honored as the five-talent person who gladly presented ten talents to his lord: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Matt. 25:21.
As we joyfully accept the revelation of Christian Science, which is God's law, our love for God, infinite Spirit, becomes richer and more active. We gratefully strive to know God as eternal Life, omniscient Truth, and omnipresent Love; and this involves a constant effort to turn away from material sense views and to discern what God, divine Mind, is conscious of. Being receptive to the truth that man is the compound idea of God—God-created, God-maintained, inseparable from his Maker, reflecting all the qualities of his Father-Mother—inspires us to express these qualities in daily life, qualities such as love, constancy, and integrity, to name a few.
Faithfulness over immediate tasks is called for. Whether they are influential or lowly, routine or challenging, even exasperating or altogether frustrating, our duties deserve joy and obedience. We need to serve God right where we are and draw nearer to Him, seeing His control manifested in greater efficiency and satisfaction in work and in smoother personal relationships. Mrs. Eddy writes, "First purify thought, then put thought into words, and words into deeds; and after much slipping and clambering, you will go up the scale of Science to the second rule, and be made ruler over many things." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 341.
