My introduction to Christian Science came as...

My introduction to Christian Science came as the result of following up on this invitation from an aunt: "If I give you a book, will you read it?" The book was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I do not now recall what passages I first read, but I do remember that when I read them, I knew Christian Science was what I had been seeking.

There was no branch Church of Christ, Scientist, nearby and therefore no Sunday School for me to attend, so I began studying the weekly Bible Lessons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. The first testing time came not long after. My ears began to ache—a problem I had suffered with periodically since early childhood. But I was confident that I could be healed through my newfound understanding of God. Still I felt very alone and longed for help from my aunt, who lived in another city. Since it was impossible to reach her at the time, I turned to Science and Health for my help.

After I had read a short while, the thought came to me clearly that I must rely on God, instead of on a person, for healing. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 203), "Spiritual perception brings out the possibilities of being, destroys reliance on aught but God, and so makes man the image of his Maker in deed and in truth." Soon I fell asleep. When I woke, my ears had drained and I was completely well. The condition never recurred.
