It had always been my firm conviction that I would never, ever, seek medical attention for any kind of physical difficulty. Since early childhood I, as well as the members of my family, had been healed of many things, and God had been our only physician.

Then several years ago I had an attack of severe pain in the abdomen. It occurred quite suddenly and without warning. I was overwhelmed with fear. My husband quickly called a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly agreed to help me through prayer. However, after several hours of no apparent change, I was willing to do anything to get relief from the pain. I asked my husband, who is also a Christian Scientist, to dismiss the practitioner and take me to a hospital. He was quite surprised but complied with my request.

At the hospital, after I had been given a number of examinations and X-rays, the problem was diagnosed as kidney stones. An operation was scheduled for the next day at noon. By that time I was beginning to think more clearly. I realized that I did not want an operation. All that night I prayed, turning to God with all my heart. My desire was to gain release from the hospital so that I could go home and freely pray in Christian Science for healing.
