"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today...

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings." This statement, which begins the Preface to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. vii), catalyzed the healing of a massive gastric hemorrhage, which had confined me to a hospital where fear for my life had been expressed by doctors. I had had a similar attack two years before, in 1955.

I was sharing a hospital room with another man, who spent a great deal of time reading his Bible. Thinking about the Bible brought back memories of visits to a Christian Science Sunday School and things my grandmother, a Christian Science practitioner, had told me.

My wife was not a Christian Scientist, and I had not adhered to the teachings of Science for over twenty years. During one visit, however, I asked my wife if she would bring me a Bible. She did so the next day, and I started reading it from the beginning. In Genesis I found these familiar verses (1:26): "God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth" and (1:31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."
