Let's give thanks

Thanksgiving was so highly regarded by Mrs. Eddy that she designated a special church service for it, which she outlined in the Manual of The Mother Church. What an inspiration this service is, a time for us all to gather in our churches to share our harvest of spiritual blessings.

But gratitude can never be confined to one day. Gratitude is not just saying "thank you" in a perfunctory manner, nor is it a glib recital of our blessings. It is a warm glow within us, deep appreciation for God's loving care. Gratitude is the key that opens the door to healing.

"Our gratitude is riches," Christian Science Hymnal, No. 249. a loved hymn tells us. Why is gratitude such an important healing ingredient? It replaces sorrow with joy. It replaces "I can't/I haven't/if only" thinking with a sense of our God-given ability to do what needs to be done—and with thanksgiving to God for what we have rather than grumbling over what we have not.
