A long time ago, when we were really in need of help, someone referred us to a Christian Science practitioner, adding, "It [Christian Science] works." My husband suffered much pain at the time, and medical treatment hadn't relieved him of this problem. When he'd been unable to work for weeks, we finally asked a practitioner for help through prayer. My husband's healing came in two days, and the difficulty has never recurred. However, at the time we were not familiar with Christian Science; we just accepted this healing as something nice without going into Science further.

Many years later things weren't going well in our family, and I became a sick and remorseful person. There seemed to be a great emptiness in me. I had been born in the Netherlands, and the religious teachings I'd received during my childhood had made me fearful and confused.

I had had medical attention for throat problems and other ailments. Then I was given a preliminary diagnosis that I might have cancer. I went into shock. Another examination, by a specialist, was inconclusive; he advised me to have more tests. Finally, I became so desperate, so burdened by trials and tribulations, that I decided to seek God as an answer to my problems. At that point I made up my mind to give my life another direction.
