Although my parents never became members of The Mother Church, I am so grateful that they enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School and were faithful in seeing to it that I did whatever assignments were given me.

During my first year at college, I came home one Saturday for a week's vacation between semesters. That Sunday, while visiting friends, I became ill and was brought home and put to bed immediately. My parents became very fearful and called a doctor who, after examining me, said that I was suffering from a streptococcic infection. I asked my parents if they objected to my having Christian Science treatment. They had seen healings come through prayer in Science before, so now they lovingly gave their consent.

A Christian Science practitioner was called to pray for me, and the next morning he came to our home. Because of the illness I didn't want to do anything but sleep, yet I needed to be aroused; so the practitioner asked me if I would think about this Bible passage (II Sam. 22:33): "God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect." He also reminded me of the synonyms for God that I had learned in the Sunday School. They're found in Mary Baker Eddy's answer to the question "What is God?" on page 465 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."
